Resources for Therapists

Safe Zone

On Creating Safe(r) Spaces & Working with LGBTQ* Clients:

Historically, counseling and other helping professions have compounded the discrimination of LGBTQ* individuals by being insensitive, uninformed, and inadequately trained and supervised to provide services to LGBTQ* individuals and their loved ones.  I saw a real need to start creating safe(r) spaces for our clients, and so, with the help of funding from APIRG, I started collecting the following list of resources for counsellors working with LGBTQ* clients. I also had the pleasure of offering a workshop for counsellors on the same topic and plan to do so again when the time is right.

A few downloadable guides for therapists:
Working therapeutically with LGBTI clients
Terminology Sheet (via ISMSS)
Competencies for working with LGBQQIA clients
Competencies for working with transgender clients

And a handout made by me on creating safe(r) spaces:
